Have you ever wondered why Shavuot, the holiday that commemorates the giving of the Torah, is celebrated with cheesecake?

  1. Symbolism of the Torah: The Torah is often likened to “milk and honey” in Jewish texts, symbolizing its sweetness and nourishment. Consuming dairy products is a way to symbolically partake in this nourishment.
  2. The Transition After Receiving the Torah: Upon receiving the Torah, new kosher dietary laws were introduced. Since the newly minted Jewish People didn’t have the necessary utensils to prepare kosher meat immediately, they opted for dairy meals, which are simpler to prepare in accordance with the new laws.
  3. Connection to the Land of Israel: The Torah describes Israel as a “land flowing with milk and honey.” Eating dairy foods on Shavuot celebrates the agricultural bounty of the land of Israel, which is deeply connected to this holiday.
